Canada urged to provide deserters' haven

OTTAWA, May 4 (UPI) -- Cindy Sheehan, the American anti-war activist, has urged Canadians to provide a sanctuary for U.S. military deserters.

Sheehan made headlines last year when she staged a month-long anti-war demonstration outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch. Her 24-year-old son died in Iraq five days after he began his duty there in 2004.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said about 150 deserters are known to be living in Canada, but the War Resisters Support Campaign said the number could be much higher.
