CARDIFF, Wales, May 3 (UPI) -- A medical firm's plan to provide a controversial treatment for multiple sclerosis has been met by firm opposition in Wales.
The plan has since been withdrawn.
Dr. Dai Lloyd, a Welsh doctor, said an announcement by Advanced Cell Therapeutics that it would provide stem cell shots to MS patients on board a Welsh ferry is a threat to patient's safety, the Western Mail reported.
Lloyd called for a review of the laws of international waters.
The stem cell treatment is touted by Swiss-based ACT as a breakthrough for MS sufferers, but is illegal in Britain and suspended in Ireland.
The owners of Swansea Cork Ferries -- which owns the ferry ACT said would be the platform for the treatment as it sailed in international waters -- said no medical procedures are allowed on board.
The Western Mail reports ACT has since publicly withdrawn its plans.
Lloyd said ACT's plans were trying to circumvent accepted medical procedure.
