LONDON, May 3 (UPI) -- Britain's beleaguered Home Secretary Charles Clarke told Parliament Wednesday deportations of more than 1,000 violent released inmates have begun.
Clarke has faced torrents of criticism following last week's disclosure that 1,023 violent foreign criminals had been released from prison over the past several years.
Clarke told the House of Commons that the most serious 79 cases had been considered, with deportation started in 70 cases. The other nine will not be deported, the BBC reported.
Clarke said his department is now actively determining deportation status on 446 of the 1,023 inmates, Sky News said.
Friday, he reluctantly reported at least five of the inmates had been re-convicted of serious crimes, including assault and drug offenses.
Prime Minister Tony Blair is deflecting opposition calls for Clarke to step down, saying the system was flawed long before Clarke became Home Secretary.
