ABUJA, Nigeria, May 3 (UPI) -- Negotiations over Sudan's embattled Darfur region were extended by 48 hours Wednesday, as a British official warned the world's patience "is now running out."
The talks are in neighboring Nigeria and involve negotiators for the Sudanese government, rebel groups and militias, African Union officials and diplomats from the United States and Britain.
The current round had a deadline of approving an 85-page draft document calling for disarmament by midnight Tuesday, but was extended 48 hours, the Financial Times reported.
Hilary Benn, Britain's international development secretary, expressed frustration with the repeated delays.
"The international community's patience with this conflict is now running out. These negotiations have been going on for two years," said Benn.
The violence erupted in Darfur in 2003 when rebels started a fight against the government. The violence has killed tens of thousands of people and made more than 2 million homeless.
