Serbia misses deadline on Mladic arrest

BELGRADE, Serbia, May 1 (UPI) -- Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica has missed a deadline to hand over war-crimes suspect Ratko Mladic to the U.N. tribunal.

A spokesman for Carla Del Ponte, chief prosecutor at The Hague war-crimes tribunal, said Monday the body had no comment on the fact that the deadline had passed without Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military leader, having been arrested, Belgrade's private B92 radio reported.

Mladic is sought on genocide and crimes-against-humanity charges, including the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in July 1995.

The European Union has threatened Serbia with suspension of association talks, scheduled to convene May 11, and Kostunica promised that Mladic will be arrested and handed over to The Hague court by April 30.

Spokesman Anton Nikiforov said Del Ponte is to meet EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn to discuss the issue Wednesday.
