PARIS, April 30 (UPI) -- French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin could be forced to resign over charges he used state institutions to pursue a private vendetta.
A military official has told French magistrates that de Villepin ordered him to probe corruption allegations against Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy, a political rival.
The case involves a Luxemboug-based financial institution accused of making illicit payments to French politicians over the sale of military frigates to Taiwan, the BBC reported Sunday.
Among the list of names that surfaced in the probe was that of de Villepin's rival, Nicolas Sarkozy.
A French army general told magistrates the prime minister specifically asked him to investigate the inclusion of Mr. Sarkozy in the files, subsequently exposed as a forgery.
