Wife shot to keep her out of nursing home

DALLAS, April 29 (UPI) -- An 83-year-old Texas man who didn't want his wife to go to a nursing home after his death has been charged with killing her.

But friends and family members say James Roberson will never stand trial because of his own frail health. Roberson shot his wife Mary as she lay in bed in their home in the Dallas area and then tried to kill himself, only to have the gun jam.

"My father has never done anything for this family that wasn't out of love," the couple's daughter, Sally, told the Dallas Morning News. "I have multiple sclerosis and am compromised, and he knows how difficult it is to be a caregiver."

Roberson suffers from cancer. His wife, after two strokes, was unable to take care of herself, and he had promised she would never go into a nursing home.
