Kewaunee Nuclear Plant on 'alert' status

CARLSON, Wis., April 27 (UPI) -- The Kewaunee Nuclear Plant in Carlton, Wis., was put on "alert status" Wednesday to repair a small water leak on the non-nuclear side of the plant.

This was the first time in about 20 years that the plant had been put on alert, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported.

Joe Reid, local affairs manager with the plant, said there were no emissions of radioactive materials beyond the normally monitored levels associated with plant operations.

He said the alert was declared as a "conservative measure to prepare for anything that might arise."

Plant operators had planned on coming off-line for about a day to fix the leak, which was smaller than a pinhole, he said.

There were no evacuations associated with the alert, said Sallie Marquardt, a public information officer with Kewaunee County Emergency Management, which was fully mobilized for the alert.
