Texas groups want Mexican border closed

HOUSTON, April 23 (UPI) -- Anti-illegal immigration protesters staged a rally in Houston over the weekend in anticipation of the Senate's resumption Monday of debate on a reform bill.

In contrast to the massive pro-immigration rallies held across the nation, Saturday's demonstration in front of the Mexican consulate drew about 100 people, the Houston Chronicle reported.

They waved U.S. flags and held signs such as "Remember the Alamo" and "Texas Isn't a Mexican Colony," the report said. Some passing motorists honked horns in agreement but there was no counter protest.

Speakers at the rally called on President George W. Bush to issue an executive order to close the Texas-Mexico border, and complained that more than 50 percent of U.S. immigrants are from Mexico even though that country accounts for only 7 percent of the world's population.

Leaders of the rally -- organized by Texans for Immigration Reform, U.S. Border Watch and Texas Minutemen -- said they are planning a larger protest at the president's Crawford ranch on May 6.
