British official questions campaign loans

LONDON, April 22 (UPI) -- The British Labor Party's treasurer said he believes politicos around Prime Minister Tony Blair knowingly sidestepped campaign donation guidelines.

The Times of London reports Jack Dromey said he believes people took in campaign loans instead of donations -- a loophole in a law his own party put forward last year.

He said the activity was done secretly, without his knowledge or any other executives of the party.

Dromey told the BBC he wasn't sure if the loans came in on their own or if they were solicited instead of donations, since he was kept in the dark on the protocol.

He said he had no proof but thinks it was an active effort to sidestep the law, not an accident.
