Hurricane relief fund begins distribution

NEW ORLEANS, April 21 (UPI) -- Many places of worship in Louisiana hit by Hurricane Katrina will soon start receiving funds from a relief fund headed by former Presidents Bush and Clinton.

The initial distribution of $20 million is part of about $119 million the former presidents helped raise since they began soliciting funds last fall, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

The fund was to hold a seminar Saturday at New Orleans' Marriott Hotel to explain eligibility requirements and show pastors and other religious leaders how to apply.

Bishop T.D. Jakes, co-chairman of a Bush-Clinton advisory committee, said the decision to give $20 million to faith-based organizations reflects a belief that religious centers are catalysts for recovery in their neighborhoods, the report said.
