Arms cache found in California home

UPLAND, Calif., April 19 (UPI) -- A raid at the home of a retired U.S. Army officer in Upland, Calif., reportedly yielded about 900 firearms hidden in various places in the upscale residence.

The arms were found behind secret panels, under floors and behind walls, reports The Los Angeles Times. Upland, in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, is southeast of Los Angeles.

The raid Friday by federal, state and local police was part of an investigation of shooting incidents in February and last month, the Times reported. The seized arms included assault weapons, submachine guns, automatic rifles, explosive devices and other weapons, a U.S. Justice Department special agent told the newspaper. She said a wine cellar had been converted into a makeshift weapons storage area and shooting range.

Robert Ferro, 61, a retired Special Forces officer, was accused of running a black-market gun business out of the home. He was charged with eight felony counts, including possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a destructive device, possession of a silencer and possession of a deadly weapon. In 1992, he was convicted of possession of illegal explosives and sentenced to two years in prison.
