Saudi Arabia pledges Palestinian aid

RAMALLAH, West Bank, April 18 (UPI) -- Saudi Arabia announced plans Tuesday to donate $92 million to the Palestinian Authority.

The authority now has pledges of more than $200 million, including $10 million from Russia and $50 million each from Qatar and Iran, the Jerusalem Post reported. The United States and European Union have cut off aid because of Hamas's refusal to recognize Israel's right to exist.

The Hamas government has financial demands that include 140,000 civil servants who have not yet been paid for March. Police officers occupied government buildings in Gaza last week and have threatened to occupy government buildings next week if they remain unpaid.

The Saudi aid was announced after a meeting between Saudi Arabian Foreign PA Foreign Minister Mahmoud Zahar.
