ALEXANDRIA, Va., April 18 (UPI) -- A psychologist told jurors in a federal courtroom in Virginia Tuesday that he believes admitted terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui is a paranoid schizophrenic.

Xavier Amador testified that Moussaoui, during a 1-hour interview last year, got water from the sink in his cell and spat it at him 15 times," The Los Angeles Times reported.

"Crazy or not, that is the question," Moussaoui exclaimed, immediately after the jury took a break.

Defense lawyers hope to convince jurors who have already found that Moussaoui's actions could merit the death penalty that he is mentally ill. The jury could also determine Moussaoui should be sentenced to life in prison without parole. Federal prosecutors say Moussaoui should be given a death sentence because he was part of the Sept. 11, 2001, hijacking plot.

Amador said that Moussaoui said that he wants to become a martyr while at the same time believing that U.S. President George Bush will free him, the Times reported.

Moussaoui, during the interview, called Amador, who was born in Cuba, an "American Jew."

"My job is to kill you so I can get to paradise," the psychologist quoted Moussaoui as saying, the Times report stated.
