Mother sentenced for hiding slaying by son

NEW YORK, April 18 (UPI) -- A New York woman who kept secret her son's 1993 killing and burial of a man in her backyard was sentenced to 1-to-3 years in prison, a report said.

Virginia Randall-Whitaker, 50, was sentenced Monday for hindering the prosecution of her son, James Brown, and tampering with evidence in the slaying of Shawn Williams.

Brown, who escaped prosecution by moving to Egypt, was accused of shooting Williams and burying his body, The New York Daily News reported.

Randall-Whitaker told neighbors the foul smell in her back yard was from burying a family dog.

"You're a lying monster," Williams' sister, Carol, told Randall-Whitaker at the sentencing. "You buried my 21-year-old brother and his name was Shawn Garfield Williams, not a dead dog."

Williams' remains were found in 2001 after Randall-Whitaker sold the house and the new owners hired a contractor to break up concrete in the back yard.
