Times-Picayune, Sun Herald get Pulitzers

NEW YORK, April 17 (UPI) -- The Biloxi Sun Herald and the New Orleans Times-Picayune were awarded Pulitzer Prizes Monday for their coverage of Hurricane Katrina.

The 90th annual Pulitzers, announced by Columbia University in New York, were awarded on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board.

The Sun Herald was honored for its "valorous and comprehensive coverage of Hurricane Katrina," while the Times-Picayune's coverage was described as "heroic" and "multi-faceted."

The Times-Picayune also was awarded a Pulitzer in the breaking news reporting category for "its courageous and aggressive coverage of Hurricane Katrina, overcoming desperate conditions facing the city and newspaper."

The Washington Post was awarded Pulitzers for investigative reporting, beat reporting, explanatory reporting and criticism.

The New York Times was honored for national reporting, international reporting and commentary.

Jim Sheeler of the Rocky Mountain News in Denver, Colo., was awarded a Pulitzer for a feature story on a Marine major who helps the families of comrades killed in Iraq "Cope with their loss and honor their sacrifice."

The Oregonian in Portland was honored for editorials on abuses inside a forgotten Oregon mental hospital.
