Dislike of Bush may hurt GOP turnout

WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- Democrats could have a turnout advantage in this fall's midterm elections because of widespread opposition to President Bush, strategists say.

"Angry voters turn out and vote their anger," Glen Bolger, a pollster for several Republican congressional candidates, told the Washington Post. "Democrats will have an easier time of getting out their vote because of their intense disapproval of the president."

While polls have reflected voter discontent with Bush for months, observers have zeroed in on figures that show a lot more people appear passionate in their dislike of Bush than those who support him with equal fervor. Even the GOP admits that could be trouble in close congressional races.

The latest Washington Post-ABC News poll showed 47 percent of voters "strongly" disapprove of Bush's job performance, vs. 20 percent who said they "strongly approve."
