Bushes host Easter Egg Hunt

April 17, 2006 at 10:42 AM

WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- President Bush kicked off the annual White House annual Easter Egg Hunt, blowing a whistle to get the eggs rolling on the South Lawn.

First lady Laura Bush thanked all the children for bringing adults to the festivities and told young volunteers staffing the event they represent "the very best of America." The first White House Easter Egg Hunt was held in 1878, hosted by President Rutherford B. Hayes.

"The president and I wish everyone very good luck on the egg roll," Mrs. Bush said.

"Happy Easter, everyone. And welcome to the White House."

This year's event had a slightly different spin. Numerous gay and lesbian families claimed some of the 15,000 available tickets to demonstrate their families are just as normal as those of straight couples.
