Pentagon memo praises Rumsfeld

WASHINGTON, April 16 (UPI) -- A group of retired U.S. generals received a memo from the Defense Department outlining the extent Secretary Donald Rumsfeld consults with military brass.

While not an official rebuke of other former U.S. generals who have gone public recently calling for Rumsfeld's ouster, the memo was sent out to those who publicly support as well as oppose the Bush administration's war efforts.

A group of retired generals say Rumsfeld is an extreme micromanager and calls shots better left to career military people.

The New York Times reports the memo says, "U.S. senior military leaders are involved to an unprecedented degree in every decision-making process in the Department of Defense."

It lists the number of meetings Rumsfeld has held with top military officials and also makes light of the number of anti-Rumsfeld retirees compared to the 8,000 current and former general officers total.

The memo was dubbed a "fact sheet" by Defense Department spokesman Eric Ruff, and said it was just a usual communication.
