British broadcaster nixes crucifixion

MANILA, Philippines, April 15 (UPI) -- A British broadcaster decided not to be crucified in the Philippines, but the TV network Five said it would still air a program on the Good Friday tradition.

The program was going to be titled "Crucify Me," because Dominik Diamond had agreed to join the tradition in Cutud, north of Manila, where a small sect of Roman Catholics wishing to get closer to God actually undergo crucifixion, The Times of London said.

They build crosses, carry them through the streets, get whipped with diamond studded strands and then are nailed to the cross.

The event is known as Karabrio, and takes place 50 miles north of Manila.

Diamond had wanted to go through a rebirth of his Roman Catholic faith but right before it was his turn to be nailed to the cross, he opted out, to the boos of locals who consider Karabrio sacred, The Times said.

Ed Stobbart, executive producer at Five, said he will still air "Crucify Me" but will have to find a new title since Diamond didn't do it.
