Poll says U.S. should mind own business

WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- A USA Today/Gallup Poll says nearly half of the Americans it surveyed feel the United States should mind its own business internationally.

The poll, reported in the newspaper, said the respondents, surveyed between last Friday and Sunday, said the United States should let other countries get along as best they can on their own. Their weariness about global engagement results from their anxiety about the cost of the Iraq war and the global economy.

The poll said eight out 10 said immigration is "out of control." Two-thirds said increased trade with other countries mostly hurts U.S. workers.

The newspaper said public opinion now is reminiscent of the Vietnam War. In 1964, only 20 percent said the United States should "mind its own business" but by 1972, the percentage had nearly doubled.
