BOSTON, April 13 (UPI) -- A Harvard University survey finds that "religious centrists" are likely to be an increasingly important part of the U.S. electorate.
A report by the Institute of Politics recommends that the Republican Party move beyond issues like abortion, gay marriage and stem-cell research that are important to religious conservatives, the Washington Times reported. Democrats, at the same time, should not allow Republicans to claim the moral high ground, the report said.
The institute polled 1,200 college students at institutions across the country. The results show that 70 percent say religion is an important part of their lives and 60 percent are worried about the country's moral direction.
"Religion and morality are critical to how students think about politics and form opinions on political issues," said former New Hampshire Gov. Jeanne Shaheen, who heads the institute.
