Brazilian busted for alleged racist remark

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 13 (UPI) -- A Brazilian soccer player has been charged with racism, a criminal offense in Brazil, O Globo reported Thursday.

Antonio Carlos was accused of calling a player on an opposing team a monkey, a common racial slur in Brazil. Carlos denies making the remark.

If found guilty, he could face up to three years in prison.

Prosecutors said Carlos could avoid a lengthy prison term by handing out thousands of leaflets containing anti-racist messages at sporting events.
