BEIJING, April 11 (UPI) -- The United States and China have joined together in an effort to reduce the environmental impact of Chinese industry.
Zhou Shengxian, head of China's State Environmental Protection Administration, and his U.S. counterpart, Stephen Johnson, announced the "Strategy for Hazardous and Solid Waste Cooperation" at a meeting Monday, Xinhua, the official government news agency, said.
Plans include developing regulations for medical waste, lead-acid batteries, electronic waste, tires, and sludge generated by industrial and domestic waste water treatment. The United States also will assist China in the cleanup of hazardous waste sites.
Fighting avian influenza is also part of the strategy.
The program was included in a memorandum of understanding signed by the two environmental agencies in 2004.
