NAIROBI, Kenya, April 11 (UPI) -- Kenya Tuesday began three days of mourning to honor prominent politicians among 14 people who died when a plane crashed en route to a tribal peace summit.
The dead included two assistant ministers and four members of the Kenyan Parliament who were in a military plane that crashed Monday during a torrential downpour near Marsabit, about 280 miles northeast of Nairobi, the BBC reported.
The 14 people were on their way to mediate a bloody tribal feud near the border with Ethiopia.
"It is unfortunate that this tragedy has occurred when the peace delegation was on its way for a crucial meeting of bringing peace and harmony among the communities living in the region," President Mwai Kibaki said in a national address.
Kibaki ordered three days of national mourning beginning Tuesday.
Francis Ole Kaparo, the speaker of Kenya's National Assembly, said the crash was the worst tragedy to hit the parliament, the report said.
