SANTIAGO, Chile, April 11 (UPI) -- A former Chilean colony leader has been charged with human rights abuse along with 17 others, El Mercurio reported Tuesday.

The colony's founder, Paul Schaefer, was accused of hiding political dissidents on the vast track of land his colony occupies in southern Chile. The colony is now under state control.

Others charged included two former commanders of the Chilean secret police.

Judicial officials maintain Schaefer was working with the former military regime led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet who from 1973-90 ruled the South American nation with an iron fist.
