TAIPEI, Taiwan, April 10 (UPI) -- A forthcoming meeting between Lien Chan, the leader of Taiwan's Kuomintang opposition party, and China's President Hu Jintao has Taiwan authorities nervous.
Describing it as a possible crisis for Taiwan, Vice President Annette Lu Hsiu-lien expressed concern over the meeting to be held in Beijing next Sunday, the South China Morning Post reported Monday.
"This will be the second time Lien Chan has talked with Hu. After their talks next week, Hu will meet George W. Bush. We can't help but worry that something might happen, which could be a crisis for Taiwan," Lu told a seminar Sunday.
She said Beijing over the years had employed six tactics to deal with Taiwan: military, economic, diplomatic, opinion, psychological and legal warfare.
Lu said it would be unthinkable for the opposition to continue appeasing Beijing and even joining forces with it to squeeze Taiwan. She said if the KMT really cared for Taiwan's interests, it should tell Beijing there were "two Chinas."
Lien on Thursday will lead a 170-strong delegation to Beijing, including 50 business leaders and 29 legislators. He is scheduled to meet Hu Sunday at the end of a high-level economic forum between the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party.
