DAMASCUS, Syria, April 9 (UPI) -- Syrian President Bashar Assad has reportedly agreed to meet with the U.N. envoy investigating the assassination of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
It is the first time Assad has met with U.N. investigators since the probe started last summer, the BBC reported.
While U.N. progress reports have implicated Syria in the death of the Lebanese prime minister, Damascus has denied any involvement. Syria's former vice-president Abdel Halim Khaddam has alleged that Assad was involved in Hariri's death.
Syrian sources quoted in the Lebanese media have said the Syrian president would see the chief U.N. investigator, Serge Brammertz, as part of a scheduled reception of visitors.
The BBC said Brammertz is also expected to talk to Syrian Vice President Farouk Sharaa.
