ATHENS, Ga., April 8 (UPI) -- The University of Georgia has named its new biotechnology center after the late Republican U.S. Senator and former Peace Corps head Paul Coverdell.
Former President George H.W. Bush was the featured speaker at the event Friday, attended by politicians of both parties and students, alumni and faculty of the university, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
"In the Washington world of bitter partisanship, Paul was the voice of reason," said Bush, who appointed Coverdell to the Peace Corps post in 1989.
Coverdell was elected to the Senate in 1992 and served until he died in 2000.
The $40 million Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences is a laboratory facility for faculty and students, intended to advance the state's goal of becoming the premier source for biotechnology research.
