MONTREAL, Ontario, April 6 (UPI) -- A Montreal hospital has been ordered to pay $45,000 to a woman who had an abortion, and then had twins.
Saoudat Batoukaeva went to St-Luc Hospital to have an abortion seven years ago, but it didn't take, CBC News reported. Hospital staff confirmed three weeks after the procedure that Batoukaeva was still pregnant.
They tried to contact the Russian-born woman, who doesn't speak English or French, but she had moved to Toronto. She never received the hospital's two phone calls or a letter saying the abortion had not ended the pregnancy.
The twin babies were born 25 weeks into the pregnancy, when their mother was 40. A normal pregnancy lasts about 38 weeks.
A judge found the hospital had not done enough to find Batoukaeva but cut the requested sum in half because the woman had skipped a required post-operation checkup.
