ATTLEBORO, Mass., April 6 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts man says he was forced out of his job as teacher at a Roman Catholic school when he admitted impregnating his girlfriend.
Robb McCoy, 27, told the Boston Herald he was ordered to resign from Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro, where he was a social studies teacher and football coach.
McCoy, now the father of a 2-month-old daughter, asked his parish priest to marry him and the baby's mother when he found out she was pregnant. The priest, the Rev. David Costa of Sacred Heart Church in North Attleboro, refused.
The former teacher believes Costa was right that he was not planning to get married for the right reasons.
The Diocese of Fall River has a policy that unmarried employees must be celibate.
Tammy McCoy, Robb's mother, said she is "very, very proud of what he's done: to choose life and love over his job," suggesting that if he had kept his mouth shut he could have saved his job.
McCoy hopes to find another teaching job.
