Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
NEW YORK, April 6 (UPI) -- Two retired New York City police detectives were convicted Thursday of moonlighting for the Lucchese crime family, including fingering targets for mob hits.
Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, who had been free on bail, were jailed immediately after the federal jury in Brooklyn delivered its verdict. They were convicted of murder for hire and racketeering and face life in prison.
United States Attorney Roslynn Mauskopf said the verdict holds the pair accountable "for their stunning betrayal of the badge, accountable for disgracing the finest police department in the world and accountable for abusing in the most heinous way imaginable the privilege and the power of public service."
Prosecutors said during the trial that the two men were paid $4,000 a month by Lucchese Family boss Anthony Casso between 1986 and 1990 and earned an additional $65,000 for killing Eddie Lino after faking a traffic stop.
