N.Y. Times: Snow may soon leave Treasury

WASHINGTON, April 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of the Treasury John Snow may soon step down, The New York Times reported Wednesday.

The newspaper, citing unnamed "prominent Republicans" and the relatively tepid vote of confidence U.S. President George Bush gave Snow on Tuesday, said Snow could leave the Cabinet in the next several months.

Bush was asked about Snow during a photo opportunity Tuesday, Bush pointed out that the Treasury secretary was taking part in healthcare discussions and "he has been a valuable member of my administration and I trust his judgment and appreciate his service."

A change at Treasury, where Snow has been secretary since Feb. 3, 2003, has been rumored for several weeks. The recent change with Josh Bolten set to become Bush's chief of staff stoked the rumors.

The Times' sources said Bolten was looking for someone to be a stronger advocate of White House economic policies.

One source told the newspaper: "They're waiting for (Snow) to do the right thing. They though he would have gotten the message right now and submitted his resignation."
