TOKYO, April 4 (UPI) -- Japan is proposing negotiations between 16 Asian nations aimed at creating an East Asia free trade zone, a trade ministry official said Tuesday in Tokyo.
Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Toshihiro Nikai said at a press briefing that Japan will ask the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as China, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand, to consider beginning regional free trade talks in 2008, Kyodo News reported.
He also said Japan will propose setting up a policy coordination entity in East Asia, modeled on the 30-member Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, to promote regional economic integration.
As a first step, Japan will consult with the ASEAN secretariat on establishing a research center for policy analysis and proposals, somewhere in Southeast Asia, the news agency reported.
The 16 nations comprise the East Asian Summit, inaugurated last December in Kuala Lumpur with the eventual goal of creating a regional community. ASEAN's member countries are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
