RALEIGH, N.C., April 3 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C., is suffering from dementia and is at a convalescent center, the Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer reports.
Helms's wife of 63 years, Dot, said the dementia is vascular-related and his health is deteriorating.
"He has his good days and his bad days," she told the newspaper. "He still sees friends. Company is good for him. He is still signing books. But he is not able to conduct any business or make any speeches."
Helms, 84, suffers from prostate cancer, heart disease and other problems. He left Congress in January 2003.
Dot Helms said her husband seems to recognize people and he is very gracious.
"He is his same self in a lot of ways. He just doesn't always remember," she said.
