Probe of slain Canadians said 'botched'

TORONTO, April 1 (UPI) -- A prominent criminal lawyer charges that Mexican authorities "botched" the inquiry into the slaying of a Canadian couple.

Edward Greenspan also told a Toronto news conference Mexican President Vicente Fox had compromised the situation to where it would difficult to find the culprit, the CBC reported.

Greenspan said that "no president should get involved" in a murder investigation.

Nancy and Dominic Ianiero of Woodbridge were found with their throats slashed on Feb. 20 at the Barcelo Maya Beach Resort while visiting the Mayan Riviera to attend their daughter's wedding.

Greenspan cast doubt on Fox's assertions earlier this week that the slayings were committed by a Canadian member of the wedding party. Greenspan suggested that a Mexican national, identified early on by the Ianiero family, may have been involved.
