NARBERTH, Pa., March 24 (UPI) -- Democrats seeking to take control of the U.S. House are finding some of the best candidates to pull off that feat are women.
Democrats need to see a switch of 15 seats from Republican hands to retake control of the House, which has been in Republican control since 1994.
Democrats argue there are enough competitive races among the 435 seats in the House to make the change. And, while it may be a coincidence, the party's candidates in about half of the races considered up for grabs are women, The New York Times points out.
One such candidate is Lois Murphy, seeking a House seat from Pennsylvania. She told the Times she isn't sure her sex is, as the newspaper put it, "a particular asset," but sees her platform of spending responsibility, healthcare, the environment and ethics reform as reaching voters.
L. Tammy Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran running in Illinois, told the Times: "It's about change on so many levels. If being a woman underscores that, makes it clear that I'm going to be an effective agent of change, that's great."
