JERUSALEM, March 24 (UPI) -- An Israeli official says the rise of a Hamas government in the Palestinian Authority does not necessarily mean more terrorist activity.
Chief of Staff Dan Halutz sounded a hint of optimism Friday with the belief that the traditionally hard-line Hamas might soften its stance because of new public obligations "be they economical or educational," ynetnews.com reported.
Hamas also may try to prove to the international community that the terror image is unfounded, he said.
But, currently, he said: "They present themselves as an enemy of Israel. If they will want to change their stance, they will have to change their outlook and compromise."
Referring to the Iranian threat, Halutz said, "The Iranian president's statements should not be taken lightly; we must prepare accordingly."
