PHOENIX, March 24 (UPI) -- Thousands of people marched in downtown Phoenix Friday to protest proposed changes in U.S. immigration law.
The protesters marched to the offices of U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., the Arizona Republic reported.
Kyl has sponsored legislation that would require all illegal immigrants to leave the United States within five years. They could apply for re-entry as temporary workers or permanent residents once they are in their home countries.
Police believe 15,000 to 20,0000 people participated in Friday's march in Phoenix -- waving U.S. and Mexican flags and carrying signs that read "We are not criminals."
Marches were held around the country to dramatize the issue.
In Phoenix, many people have been protesting since 2004, when the state adopted a referendum that cuts illegal immigrants off from many benefits.
"It's unfair what they want to do," said Phoenix resident Elida Lozano. "It's racist. You're not going to find terrorists outside a Home Depot looking for a job."
