DeBakey recovering from surgery at 97

HOUSTON, March 24 (UPI) -- Dr. Michael DeBakey, a pioneering heart surgeon, is reportedly recovering well at a Texas hospital after surgery for an aneurysm.

Experts say that DeBakey, 97, may be the oldest person to recover from the condition, the Houston Chronicle reported. The operation to remove the aortic aneurysm occurred Feb. 9 at the Methodist Hospital.

"He's doing much better. His doctors, I think, are very satisfied with his recovery," a relative, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the Chronicle. "He's walking a little bit."

DeBakey's achievements include performing the first transplant of an artificial heart. He is also chancellor emeritus of Baylor University, which plans this spring to open a museum celebrating his achievements.
