KABUL, Afghanistan, March 23 (UPI) -- Afghanistan's foreign minister, Abdullah Abdullah, has been replaced in a cabinet reshuffle proposed by President Hamid Karzai.
Abdullah will be replaced by Karzai's adviser on foreign affairs, Rangeen Dadfar Spanta, the BBC reported Wednesday.
Several ministries have been merged, eliminating four cabinet positions.
The changes will be presented to the newly elected parliament for their approval later this week.
The list was confirmed within hours of the deadline set by the constitution after elections six months ago.
Ismail Khan, the former governor of Herat and a prominent warlord, retained his post as minister of energy and water, the only warlord left in Karzai's cabinet.
The new cabinet includes only one woman, new women's affairs minister Suraya Rahim Subrang, but has a balanced representation of Afghanistan's different tribes and ethnic group.
Most of the key positions remain unchanged, such as Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and Economy Minister, Amin Farhang.
Observers say Afghans hope the new cabinet can bring an end to ethnic infighting and corruption.
