MANILA, Philippines, March 22 (UPI) -- Former Philippine President Joseph Estrada has denied accusations that he took huge kickbacks while in office, reports the Sun Star newspaper in Manila.
Estrada, an actor-turned-political leader who was ousted in 2001, told an anti-graft court that he was framed.
A provincial governor has said he delivered millions of pesos in tobacco excise tax to Estrada in his house in San Juan.
Estrada also denied keeping a close relationship with the governor who also had accused him of having links to illegal gambling, the report said.
Prosecutors allege Estrada amassed about $77 million in illegal gambling payoffs, tax kickbacks and commissions stashed in secret bank accounts. He also faces a perjury charge for allegedly underreporting his assets in 1999, the newspaper reported.
