Cemetery vandals make public apology

SUMNER, Wash., March 21 (UPI) -- Two teenagers who admitted vandalizing a cemetery in a Washington State town made a public apology to the City Council.

While Sumner council meetings are televised on cable television, the cameras did not show the boys' faces, although their words could be heard, the Tacoma News-Tribune reported.

The pair overturned or uprooted about 300 headstones and grave markers, breaking some of the monuments. Officials estimate the cost of the damage at $170,000.

The older boy, now 16, called the vandalism stupid.

"I'm sorry to bring depression and anger to this town," he said.

The 15-year-old asked for forgiveness, saying he would never forgive himself.

A judge, who also sentenced the boys to 90 days incarceration, probation and community service, ordered the apologies. They still face a restitution hearing.
