Mugabe opponent wants 'people power'

HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 19 (UPI) -- An opposition leader in Zimbabwe calls for the use of "people power," saying that an electoral strategy has been ineffective against President Robert Mugabe.

Morgan Tsvangirai, a former union leader and founder of the Movement for Democratic Change, addressed the organization's annual conference, The Sunday Times of London reported.

He told members the organization should "widen our options to include using people power to put pressure on this regime that has reduced us to paupers and beggars in our own motherland."

In an interview before the conference, Tsvangirai told the Times electoral challenges have only made Mugabe stronger.

The MDC split recently when Tsvangirai decided not to contest last October's Senate elections. He argued that spending time and money running for office in a fraudulent election was a waste.
