June 15 set for Berlusconi trial decision

MILAN, Italy, March 16 (UPI) -- Italian judges said they would wait until June 15 to decide whether to order a trial for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on corruption charges.

Berlusconi has been hit by allegations he bribed corporate lawyer David Mills, the husband of British Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, to keep quiet about details of two trials involving the bribing of tax officers and kickbacks to the late Prime Minister Bettino Craxi.

The Italian news agency ANSA reports there were fears the decision would be handed down before the April 9 general election.

Mills, who initially described the money he received as a gift from Berlusconi, now says the money came from a third party. He denies lying about anything.

Berlusconi also is facing possible trial in a fraud case involving the family television company, Mediaset.
