WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) -- U.S. Army Gen. John Abizaid told a congressional committee the United States is winning the "long war" in Iraq but sectarian tension is a growing concern.
Abizaid appeared Wednesday before the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to deliver an update on U.S. Central Command, which he leads and which has personnel deployed in Iraq.
"Victory in this long war will come slowly and subtly but we are winning," said Abizaid in prepared remarks.
However, the general also said U.S. support for moderate factions in Iraq was vital, since it is not the insurgency that is the major problem in Iraq but growing fighting between Sunnis and Shiites. Dozens of bodies of victims of sectarian fighting have been found in Baghdad in the last few days.
"This is not a clash between civilizations but within one -- the Muslim world," the general said. "We must help the moderates succeed while recognizing that our enemies are patient as they are ruthless."
He said the "next big hurdle" would be for Iraq to form a unity government.
