Suspects in deaths of Marines captured

ASADABAD, Afghanistan, March 14 (UPI) -- U.S. forces have arrested 11 suspected militants in eastern Afghanistan in connection with a roadside bombing that killed four U.S. Marines.

The U.S. military said that troops backed by artillery and air support conducted a sweeping operation Monday in Kunar province's Pech Valley a day after a roadside mine exploded near a convoy of Marines, killing four.

The military action has resulted in the detention of 11 insurgents believed responsible for the attack. A U.S. military statement said, "Operations to kill or capture other extremists, deny them sanctuary and restore stability to the area are continuing."

Sunday's bomb attack raised the death toll of U.S. personnel in Afghanistan to 220 since late 2001, when U.S.-led forces toppled the Taliban regime which supported al-Qaida.
