WASHINGTON, March 14 (UPI) -- Football legends are seeking success in the political arena such as Pennsylvania's Lynn Swann and Nebraska's Tom Osborne looking to win governor's races.
Swann, who won four Super Bowls in a Hall of Fame career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is running about even with incumbent Gov. Ed Rendell in early polls, Stateline.org said.
Osborne, a U.S. representative from Nebraska, had an amazingly successful career as the football coach at the University of Nebraska, posting a 255-43-9 record. His 83.6 winning percentage is as impressive as his elections' results in which he never took less than 82 percent of the vote.
They are trying to join Maryland Gov. Robert Ehrlich, football team captain while at Princeton, in a state house.
But as Sports Illustrated's Frank Deford told Stateline, "I don't think anyone's voted for Robert Ehrlich because he's been a football player." Deford said some people might vote against a famous athlete because they perceive all he is an athlete.
