Sandstorms sweep northwest China

URUMQI, China, March 12 (UPI) -- A strong cold front moved through Xinjiang Saturday, carrying sandstorms and gale force winds through parts of the westernmost region of China.

A rust-colored sandstorm hit the southwestern part of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, reducing visibility to less than 55 yards in some areas, Xinhua news service reported.

The environment monitoring station of the Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture of Kizilsus said it was the worst sandstorm to sweep Artux since 1993.

A yellow sandstorm swept over Kashi city early Sunday morning, turning the sky to saffron yellow, Xinhua said.
