2 killed by tornado on Missouri road

March 12, 2006 at 10:54 PM

ST. LOUIS, March 12 (UPI) -- Two people died on a Missouri highway when a tornado shoved their pickup truck under a propane tank as heavy rain battered the Midwest.

Those appear to have been the only deaths during Saturday's storms, the National Weather Service reported, although other tornadoes struck the area. The fatalities were on Highway 61 in a rural area near St. Mary and about 80 miles south of St. Louis.

In Missouri and southern Illinois, the NWS said, tornadoes cut a swathe of destruction 20 miles long.

In south-central Illinois, a couple was stranded after flood waters swept their car into a field near Mount Vernon, WJBD-AM reported. They were rescued by boat. One person who tried to reach them ended up stuck on the roof of their car.
